E.H. Sothern | 1859–1933
The son of British actor E.A. Sothern, Edward Hugh Sothern (known as E.H.) was born in New Orleans while his parents were on tour. At twenty, he returned to the United States to become an actor, at first in light comedy or romantic parts, but eventually as a well received Hamlet.
When he was paired with Julia Marlowe in 1904 in Romeo and Juliet, theater history was made. The two, who married in 1911, quickly became the premiere Shakespeareans of their generation in the United States.
