Another Opening, Another Show

Another Opening, Another Show

Cole Porter’s song “Another Op’nin’, Another Show,” from Kiss Me, Kate, is a good summary of the place of Shakespeare musicals in American theater. The combination of Shakespeare and the American musical has been so productive that there always seems to be “another show”—many of which have gone on from stage productions to recordings and movies.

Explore the gallery to see musicals ranging from classics like Boys from Syracuse and West Side Story to more recent experiments with country and rap.
