Field Guide to Shakespeare Editions

Field Guide to Shakespeare Editions

There were hundreds of editions of Shakespeare published in the nineteenth century. Many of the British ones were also printed in the US—sometimes in pirated form, and other times legally. Often the same editions were published over and over again in different formats, with different bindings, by different publishers, with or without illustrations, and frequently with no dates. These title pages represent some of the major Shakespeare editions likely to be found in an American family’s home. Although the title pages vary in different versions of the same edition, certain key information is usually present.
