Talking Out Loud!

In the early 1800s, American students in their early to mid-teens learned to use their bodies, faces, and voices to convey different emotions. It was part of studying “elocution,” or public speaking, an important skill for future lawyers and ministers. Students often practiced their skills using speeches from Shakespeare. Select from these videos, based on instructions and Shakespeare quotes from an 1813 schoolbook, to see how emotions were acted out.
