The Hobart Shakespeareans

The Hobart Shakespeareans

From the Mel Stuart documentary, The Hobart Shakespeareans, 2005. A coproduction of Mel Stuart, Thirteen/WNET, and P.O.V./American Documentary.

Nationally recognized public-school teacher Rafe Esquith teaches fifth grade at Hobart Elementary School in Los Angeles. Few of his students speak English as a first language and most are from low-income families, yet many go on to college and some have attended the nations top universities. Esquith has made an annual Shakespeare play one part of his widely praised teaching approach. Ian McKellen, Hal Holbrook, and Michael York are among those who have visited the class to share their own experiences.

This scene of Esquith and his students exploring Hamlet is from Mel Stuart's 2005 documentary film The Hobart Shakespeareans, a coproduction of Mel Stuart, Thirteen/WNET, and P.O.V./American Documentary.
