Research Acknowledgments

The Folger collection and the Folger staff were at the heart of the research effort on this website. In addition, we would like to acknowledge the help of many others outside the Folger staff, including those who were interviewed for the radio documentary, many of whose comments are included at greater length in this website, and the essayists for the Folger Shakespeare in American Life catalog, who are acknowledged where portions of their essays appear on this site.

We also wish to thank the librarians, curators, and staff of Folger Shakespeare Library’s neighbor institution, the Library of Congress. John Cole of the library’s Center for the Book was of special help in learning more about the distribution of books to US troops in past wars.

We extend particular thanks to Stephen Dickey, a UCLA senior lecturer who has often taught at the Teaching Shakespeare Institute at Folger Shakespeare Library, composer James Primosch, Franklin J. Hildy, director of the Shakespeare Globe Research Center (USA) Research Archive in the Department of Theatre at the University of Maryland, Jesse Aaron Cohen and others at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, and Monika Smialkowska, Research Fellow in Poetry and Drama, Doncaster College, UK, who shared information on the 1916 Shakespeare Tercentenary.

Special thanks are also due to the archivists and staffs of the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (Theodore Roosevelt’s “Summer White House”), the William Howard Taft National Historic Site, the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the Nixon Presidential Materials Staff, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, and the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, as well as the California Historical Society, the Chicago History Museum (formerly the Chicago Historical Society), the Daniel E. Koshland San Francisco History Center of the San Francisco Public Library, the Historical Society of Princeton, The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, Middlebury College Special Collections, the National Italian American Foundation, the New York State Military Museum, the White House curators’ office, and the White House Historical Association.
